Team-based workplace learning develops high-performance teams and organisations

The Business Innovation CirclesTM workshops are ideal for use in team-based, work-place programs and we often augment these programs with elements of more traditional certification-based training.

For example, the DISRUPTIVE INNOVATION program can be converted into a mixed mode delivery (on-line/workshop/workplace project), where a multi-disciplinary team works practically on a small project and/or implementing Agile, Lean/DevOps methods and practices over a period of two months in their workplace. In this instance candidates can also then write more conventional certification exams in Lean IT, DevOps and Agile/Scrum.

Converting the SOLVING PROBLEMS program into a mixed mode delivery is where amulti-disciplinary team works practically on a small improvement project and learns how to apply innovative problem solving techniques and how to use Lean for Kaizen improvement. In an IT context formal IT Service Management training can be included. In this instance candidates can write certification exams in Lean IT, FitSM, ISO20000 and get Lean Yellow-belt Certified.

Why team-based, workplace learning?

Traditional (theoretical classroom) learning has significant drawbacks and it’s far from the best method for most IT people. We have tested the learning styles of learners in a classroom setting and the results have lead us to a new teaching approach:

  • More than 50% of IT people in South Africa are primary kinaesthetic learners,
  • Between 35% to 40% are primary visual learners, and
  • Very few are primary auditory learners.

Learning styles

This result shows that the traditional classroom is the worst possible learning environment for most IT people.

Kinaesthetic learners must apply what they have learned to have effect. Learning that is not part of a change initiative is often less effective as most learners don’t get the opportunity to apply what they have learned!

People don’t work as individuals – they work as teams. If a team learns to use a new method or approach, it is more likely to have a positive effect on the work environment in the long term.

Maybe it’s time to do more than nod our heads in agreement and start doing something about it!

How? Experiential Learning.

How do team-based programs work?

Simply put, experiential learning is learning by doing! That is exactly what we do with our team-based, workplace programs!

In the Experiment and Iterate Program, e.g. we focus on Lean IT, Agile-Scrum, and DevOps, aligned with international certification that allows candidates to sit international exams.

Its best if the team comprises people from different functions of the value chain to ensure the maximum opportunity to apply what was learnt.

IT value chain

Once the basic theoretical concepts have been taught to candidates, they work as a team and identify a small improvement project in the work environment. A basic business case is developed and presented to their management for approval.

This gives the team the opportunity to apply what they have learned, whilst the facilitator provides guidance and support during the execution of the project.

Requirements for workplace learning

  • Cross-functional teams work best
  • Teams sizes between 6 and 12 can be accommodated
  • Participants will need to spend dedicated time in a workshop or improvement project environment
  • A dedicated project space is required for the duration of the project (a wall or large whiteboard that could remain in use for the duration will suffice)
  • When learning time is allocated candidates must focus on learning and not other operational tasks

Who will be the program facilitator?

Johann Botha

The primary teacher for their program is Johann Botha who has 35 years of IT Management experience. Johann has worked in the full spectrum of IT environments, and many industry segments, with most time spent in financial services, logistics, transport and IT segment.

Johann is well-known in the IT industry, both locally and internationally. He has authored or co-authored books on IT Service Management, IT Governance, Quality Management, Progressive IT Practices and is currently the Lead Author for the soon-to-be-published VeriSM Unwrapped and Applied book, aimed at helping business embrace digital transformation effectively.
